He was born in Tamil nadu, South India. He was a medical doctor. Since early childhood he had a strong desire to serve humanity. He served the poor in Malaysia for several years but was not satisfied. He thus gave up his medical career and took to a life of renunciation. He returned to India and settled in Rishikesh, Himalayas in 1924. For the next several years, he spent most of his time in meditation. He had many disciples. He made frequent tours to other parts of India and Srilanka. He attracted the people allover in and outside india by his vibrant voice and great power of oratory. In Rishikesh, he had an increasing number of disciples and an ashram grew up around him. In 1932, he started the Sivananda ashram. In 1936, The Divine Life Society was established. His main aim was spreading the spiritual knowledge and training the people in yoga and Vedanta. To him all work was sacred. He served and helped others tirelessly. The main motto of his teachings was Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate and Realize. He has authored over 200 books which spread the message of love and service. He had disciples around the world belonging to all nationalities, religions and creeds.

Swami Sivananda entered mahasamadhi on july 14,1963.

Swami vishnudevananda was a close disciple of swami Sivananda. He was born in Kerala, South India. He entered the Sivananda ashram in Rishikesh in 1947 at the age of 20. He took sannyas and was appointed the first professor of hatha yoga at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy. There he trained thousands of students, both Indian and western. In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent him to the west to spread the ancient teachings of yoga. He established the first Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Montreal. He inspired people by a strong, practical understanding of yoga and Vedanta. He taught a synthesis of yoga designed to work on all aspects of yoga. He authored the long time best selling book “The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga”.

Swami Vishnu-devananda attained mahasamadhi on november9, 1993.
